It seems like more and more musicians are following the jazz model of music performance by remixing/redoing other (often more famous) musicians’ songs as a shout out to them as well as a way to make a name for themselves. Jazz blended influences from all types of world music, encouraged innovation, and rewarded improvisation while granting performers room to add their own spin/touch in order to help move music forward. I think this is growing in popularity as we see the masses posting their own covers of popular songs on YouTube. These are just a couple of the more popular performances I have found on YouTube. Check them out when you have a sec.

A cool piece of information: Billie Holiday performed Summertime in 1936 from George Gershwin (which has been noted to have 15,000 known recordings since its creation in 1933!). Artists such as Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, Sam Cooke, Miles Davis, and Michael Buble have all covered the song in the last 70 years.
